This is a project I did during a children’s mentorship. The goal was to choose a fairy tale and draw a scene. For this, I chose the story Hansel and Gretel, when the two siblings find a house made of candy in the middle of the forest.
To create the illustration, I started with thumbnails, thinking about where I would place the text and also about the composition of the scene so that it would fit with the format of the book.
After an initial exploration, I discarded some ideas. With the ones that were left, I imagined how I would highlight the house, for this, I thought of the children coming out of the shadows of the forest and finding the house illuminated by the sunlight.
Time to test the color palette. To do this, I applied a color palette to illustration 01, and then I modified the hue and temperature to see other possibilities.
Finally, I finished the lineart. However, I decided to adjust the composition of the scene elements a little, so that the house would seem to be further away and to make the forest on the left darker.
